Only a few cats react particularly stressed during an ultrasound examination or even defend themselves against the transducer that is used for the examination. One advantage of sonography: as a familiar person, you are there all the time and can calmly talk to your velvet paw and stroke it. In difficult cases, the veterinarian can administer medication that soothes a nervous cat - general anesthesia is usually not necessary.
Before the examination, fur must be shaved
If anything, the clipper with its sounds and vibrations initially scares a cat. Because before an ultrasound examination, the patient's fur must be shaved at the points to be examined. This is how the ultrasound examination works
Depending on where your cat is examined, it must be placed in the correct position. The cat usually lies on its side for a heart examination. When examining the abdomen or abdomen, the cat lies on its side or on its back. Some vets have special foam blocks for the latter position, which are covered with a washable cover. They have an elongated recess in which the cat can be placed on its back and then not easily wriggle out. It is not uncommon for the legs of the kitty to be held on during the examination - veterinarians often ask the owner for help, which is more pleasant for the animal.
And then it starts: As with sonography in humans, a contact gel is first applied to the parts of the body that have been shaved free. The veterinarian then examines the organs to be examined with the transducer and simultaneously analyzes what is seen on a connected monitor. In the best case, the entire ultrasound scan is done as quickly as possible and takes no longer than about a quarter of an hour - cats are not wrongly considered impatient.
